Semester Recap: Commercial&Editorial

My first semester as a Senior at PPU has officially ended. It's a bittersweet feeling, only having 2 classes left now that stand between me and graduation. As much as I am so ready to get out into the real world and take on any opportunity that comes my way, I really love being in this program and I will miss it! The faculty is amazing, and I love being surrounded daily by such wickedly talented peers.

This last semester my favorite class for sure was Commercial & Editorial, taught by one of my favorite profs, Rachel Porter. We learned all about photography in the commercial and editorial fields; what it entails to be a commercial or editorial photographer, the differences between the two, the industry and its ever growing ways, and technical aspects such as lighting and post-processing. Out of my 3.5 years at Point Park I would have to say this was definitely my favorite class so far!

I picked some of my favorite images from assignments we received to share...

An image from my final project. To sum it up...complimentary colored food and dishware setups

For the above project - which was definitely my favorite out of them all - we had to find a print ad that we thought was well executed and create 2 images that could accompany the campaign and be cohesive. Here is the original ad campaign - the lemon image is the one that caught my eye first...saw it in a magazine!

We were given the name of an article and which magazine it was from. We then had to create a cover image from that article keeping in mind the style and branding of the magazine. Just as a side note - I'm a photographer, not a copy writer, though I know one could be easily fooled by my amazing copy ;)

For this assignment Rachel gave us a magazine article with all the copy intact, but the images blocked out. We were to read through the article and create a captivating image to accompany, without having any idea of what was already there. Mine was titled "Pucker Up to Vinegar"

This image was from a technical assignment. We had to find an image from a product advertisement and replicate the lighting as closely as we could. It's definitely NOT as easy as it looks!
